Dynamic pressure ridges

Continuing observations of the pressure ridges, seals and tides

Beautiful windblown sculptural snow

Even though the moon doesn’t appear above the horizon, I am continuing to walk the pressure ridges each time there is a high or low tide to determine if there is any correlation with the changes. As with the moon, this can be any time of day or night.

Over the weeks I’ve been here, I have noticed drastic changes to the pressure ridges, which are changing much faster than the ‘flagged route’ which is meant to be the safest passage through. Recently, there have been meltwater ponds developing and spreading all over the place, and there is more than one flag right the in the middle of the water!

Sometimes it’s a bit unnerving to walk in these areas because there are clearly new cracks developing, but the wind can blow snow into the cracks to cover them up and hide them.
