Snowflakes, Skuas

First time seeing snowflakes fall and finally captured a skua on my camera!

Today was the first time I have seen it properly snow, though it was so gentle and slow in the calm weather here. It was incredible to see every snowflake that landed on my gloves or my camera and then stay there for quite a while. Some were 2D, some were 3D and they were all different sizes and structures.

Every few days I see some skuas (like scavenger/vulture-like birds) that hang around the seal colony and I finally got some decent photos. They are fortunately not very vicious to passers-by but they do swoop and swing past the seals in a threatening fashion.

The seals seem to be enjoying the meltwater ponds and making new holes each day to dive into or breathe out from. They are spreading out and covering more area since I’ve been here too.

Looking through a pressure ridge crack, the top layer is snow and the bottom layer is ice
Normally the black flags indicate a hazard to steer clear, but not normally right in the middle of it!

  3. Fantastic photos! The snowflakes are amazing. Well done catching skua on the wing and on the ice! The rate of change of the pressure ridges is such a reminder of their fluidity.
