Te Whakairo – Ngā kī o te tai ao

The carving that frames the internal entrance of Scott Base, carved in 2019

It is most interesting to watch the video above and hear about the thoughtful connections entwined in the carving which frames the entrance to Scott Base. It is different from Hui Te Rangiora (navigator of the stars) Pou which stands prominently outside.

Of particular significance to our project is the depiction of maramataka in the centre of the panel above the door, as we have a central focus in observing the lunar phases in connection to the environment and its rhythms.

It is also exciting to know that one of the carvers, Poutama Hetaraka, is based at Hihiaua Cultural Centre which is not far from where I live in Whangārei. I’ll be interested to connect with him when we return and exchange our experiences of the Antarctic environment.
